On this page
- Asking for the email in the DM skips the landing page, where most people drop off.
- Ask one question at a time, and say exactly what they get for answering.
- Tell people how you’ll use their email, and only use it for that.
Why the link in bio leaks people
The usual path is: watch the reel, go to your profile, tap the link in bio, find the right page, fill in a form. Every step loses people, and most of those steps happen in a mobile browser that wasn’t built for forms.
Asking inside the DM removes almost all of it. The person is already in a conversation with you. They type their email in the chat, and the freebie arrives in the same thread.
How it works
- Someone comments your keyword, messages you, or replies to your story.
- Your automation asks for their email in the DM, and says what they’ll get.
- They reply with it. If it doesn’t look like an email, they’re asked again, politely.
- The guide, code or link arrives, and the email lands in your contacts, tagged with the post that brought them in.
What to ask (and what not to)
Every extra question costs you answers. For most freebies, the email alone is enough. Add a name if you’ll actually use it in your emails. Ask for a phone number only if you’ll call or text, and say so.
Open with what they get, not what you want: “Happy to send the guide! What email should it go to?” reads like a person. “Please provide your email address” reads like a form.
Staying on the right side of privacy rules
- Say what the email is for. “I’ll send the guide and my weekly tips” is clear.
- Link your privacy notice in the first message if you have one.
- Don’t add people to lists they didn’t ask for, and make unsubscribing easy.
- Export only what you need, and keep it somewhere safe.
Privacy laws like India’s DPDP Act and the EU’s GDPR treat you as responsible for the emails you collect, so being clear up front is both the polite and the safe choice.
Questions
Is it allowed to ask for emails in Instagram DMs?
Yes, when people choose to answer and you tell them how you’ll use their email. Keep it to the follow-up they asked for.
What if someone types a wrong email?
DMChat checks the format and asks again. Answers that still look wrong are marked, so you can tell good emails from bad ones.
How many emails can I collect for free?
On DMChat’s free plan, 50 a month with 1 form. Influencer removes both limits and adds CSV export.
